Germany blocked account for students is a common topic of discussion for every student aspiring to study in Germany. As a lifestyle influencer in Germany, I always find it fascinating to learn about the experiences of people who have moved to this beautiful country from other parts of the world. Let’s hear from Samy Thiyagarajan.
Who is the founder of Coracle?
Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Samy Thiyagarajan, co-founder of Coracle, who shared his journey from India to Germany with me. Samy’s story is a tale of determination, hard work, and perseverance. Samy grew up in a small town in India and completed his engineering degree in 2002. After graduation, he worked for a few years in India before pursuing higher studies abroad. He applied to several European universities and eventually got accepted to a master’s program in Germany. In 2004, Samy moved to Germany to pursue his studies.
Samy’s initial days as an Indian student in Germany
The initial days in Germany were tough for Samy. He had to adjust to a new culture, language, and lifestyle. But he didn’t let these challenges deter him. He immersed himself in his studies and worked part-time to support himself. He also made friends with people from different nationalities, which helped him learn about their cultures and perspectives.
The first semester proved challenging as he struggled to balance his studies and find part-time work as a foreign student without knowing German. Samy worked various physical labour jobs, including cleaning plates in a football stadium, shovelling snow, and working in the kitchen at McDonald’s. Although these jobs were not related to his engineering background, he needed the money to support himself. Despite the challenges, he found joy in shovelling snow and listening to music.
Eventually, he landed a part-time job at Phillips, which marked a turning point in his journey. He gained insight into German culture as the only non-German in the company. Although the cultural differences posed a challenge, he was grateful for the opportunity to work in an office environment.
After completing his master’s degree, Samy started working for a German company. He enjoyed his work and the challenges it presented. However, he always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to start his own business.
Samy’s Worklife in Germany
After working at the first company for a few years, Samy switched jobs to a bigger European company with better pay. He worked there for approximately 9 years but found corporate life to be difficult. He didn’t see any value or impact in what he was doing and was looking for something more meaningful.
During this time, Samy’s social life was okay. Once he started speaking more German, his social life began to evolve. He maintained a few Indian friends from university but had many more German friends. For many Germans, Samy was the first Indian they had ever met, so it was interesting for them to learn about his culture.
Eventually, Samy joined a car club and became part of a close-knit German community. He also joined a German Marksmen club where he was the only foreigner. This was a unique experience for Samy because he was able to share his perspective on what it’s like to be a foreigner in Germany with 50-year-old German men. The cultural exchange was enjoyable for both sides.
At this point, Samy was looking to do something on his own that was meaningful. He tried out several different ideas, but unfortunately, they didn’t work out. However, his failed attempts eventually led him to co-found Coracle.
Starting a business in Germany
Starting a business in a foreign country is never easy, but Samy was determined to make it work. He and his co-founder worked hard to establish Coracle and build a team of talented developers. They faced several challenges, such as finding clients and navigating the legal and regulatory landscape. But they persevered and slowly but surely, Coracle started gaining traction.
Today, Coracle is a successful company with customers from different parts of the world. Samy is grateful for the opportunities that Germany has given him and is proud to contribute to the local economy and community.
Samy’s journey from India to Germany is a testament to the power of hard work and perseverance. He faced several challenges along the way but never gave up on his dreams. His story is an inspiration to anyone who wants to move to a new country and start a new life. It shows that with determination and a positive attitude, anything is possible.
The idea of Coracle
The idea for Coracle started when Samy met some students from Hamburg University while he was helping new Indian students settle in Hamburg. As one of the few who stayed in Hamburg, Samy maintained contact with them and often heard about their difficulties, particularly with their insurance. At that time, students had to register and opt out of certain insurance plans, which resulted in upfront costs and confusion.
Samy realized that there was a need for more transparency and support for students when it came to insurance in Germany. He reached out to Matthias, an acquaintance who had helped him with his own insurance, for advice. Together, they discovered that many students were signing up for insurance plans without fully understanding what they were signing up for.
This led to the idea of creating an insurance package that would provide students with options and allow them to have more control over their insurance. This reflects in Coracle’s current insurance offerings, which prioritize transparency and student choice while purchasing German blocked account services from Coracle.
Origins of Coracle: The Beginning of a Successful Journey
At the beginning of Coracle, convincing students to apply for health insurance in their home country was a huge challenge. Samy had no idea how to even reach students, as it was at a time when WhatsApp and Facebook groups were just starting to emerge. Sometimes, he would spend 4 hours personally talking to a student to convince them that it was possible to apply for health insurance while in their home country. However, many students were sceptical and said they would do it after coming to Germany. It was a chaotic time for Samy, as he also had a newborn son and his work to juggle.
To make matters worse, the paperwork for transitioning from an employee to a self-employed person was extremely complicated, and there were no references from other Indians who had created companies. However, Samy was fortunate to have Matthias, who had helped with many documents, but as a foreigner, there was a lot of uncertainty. Despite having a good job, Samy had no income, and his wife’s support was crucial during this period.
To solve the problem of students having to print out and send back insurance forms, Coracle introduced digital forms, making them the first in Germany to digitize the health insurance process. They also introduced free travel insurance for those who applied for health insurance, which helped convince some sceptical customers. However, until the first few hundred customers arrived in Germany and saw that the insurance was true, there was a lot of scepticism.
Samy felt uncertain about the future, not knowing if they would get more customers, how the competition would evolve, and not being in his home country added to the uncertainty. They decided not to make any big financial commitments and focused on organic growth, staying true to their values of transparency and doing what was right for the customer. The customers took care of the rest, and Coracle continued to improve their process and serve their customers.
Maintaining Company Values While Scaling
The biggest challenge facing us now is maintaining our values while scaling up. As a small company, we were able to offer a certain level of quality and maintain our values easily. However, as we grow and face competition with different values, it becomes more challenging to hold onto our values. But despite the challenges, we have a bigger and smarter team, making the journey more enjoyable and less lonely than in the beginning.
We have consciously chosen not to seek external investors because it could potentially compromise our objectives and values. Organic growth has given us stability and a clear focus on our customers, rather than chasing numbers to impress investors. This approach has resulted in a work culture that prioritizes customer value over hitting numbers. Our company culture reflects this focus on helping our customers, and we measure our success by how well we serve them, rather than solely by numbers.

Life in Germany as a foreigner
As an Indian lifestyle influencer in Germany, I often talk about embracing new experiences and stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Samy’s story is a perfect example of this. He embraced the challenges of moving to a new country and used them as opportunities to learn and grow. His story is a reminder that life is full of possibilities, and we should never be afraid to chase our dreams. I hope his story inspires others to take risks, embrace challenges, and chase their dreams.
