One thing which I can say for sure is, that it’s possible to live in Germany without knowing German, but you have to learn German if you want to get a Permanent Residence (PR) also known as Settlement Permit in Germany or German Citizenship. English is enough for survival in Germany if you manage to find an English-speaking job or course at German University.
Still wondering whats the Importance of German in Germany?
1. Importance of German for Students
Language requirements are one of the crucial requirements among the university admission criteria. If your degree programme is entirely in German, then you will be required to provide proof of German language proficiency such as Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) or TestDaF or institutes like Goethe or TELC.
Alternatively, if your course is taught in English and you are not a native English speaker, you will be required to provide IELTS or TOEFL scores. Thus, you can also filter the courses based on the medium of the language which you want to study. Where to prepare IELTS course?
Thus, German taught programs require German language and English taught programs require proficiency in English language.
2. EU Blue Card or Employment Work Visa Applicants
EU Blue Card: Doesn’t Matter if you were hired on your existing German skills got an English Speaking Job. If you are coming on EU Blue Card Visa and planning to stay in Germany for a long. Your future plans are to apply for a Permanent Residence (Also known as Settlement Permit) the requirement is: If you hold an EU Blue Card and have a basic knowledge of German (A1 in this case), you will receive a settlement permit after only 33 months, provided you have been in appropriate employment during this time and paid statutory pension insurance contributions.
If you have a sufficient understanding (B1 Level in this case) of German, you will be issued with a settlement permit after only 21 months.
Employment Work Visa (Salary not qualified for Blue Card):Doesn’t Matter if you were hired on your existing German skills got an English Speaking Job. If you are coming on an employment visa and planning to stay in Germany for a long. Your future plans are to apply for Permanent Residence the requirement is: You receive a settlement permit if you have held a residence title for four years for employment as a skilled worker (with vocational training or an academic education) or as a researcher, hold a job, have paid compulsory pension insurance contributions for 48 months and have sufficient knowledge of the German language.
3. Job Seeker Visa – Importance of German Language
At the time of application, proficiency in the German Language is not asked. However, as per my personal experience and if you want to know my suggestion then please learn German before coming on Job Seeker Visa (JSV). You will have more chances to align interviews and get selected for the job if you are a fluent German Speaker. English Jobs are less in Germany as compared to German-speaking Job roles.

Dependents are free to look for jobs in Germany. Here is the requirement as per the Visa Checklist for Indians: Proof of German knowledge (A1 level): „Start Deutsch 1“ from Goethe-Institute or „Start

the Austrian Language Diploma (ÖSD).

If you are coming to Germany on a temporary visa and your company is sending you on-site, then you would obviously be not asked for showing proficiency in the German language.
